The Marzipan Story

Although new to many Americans, marzipan candy has been in Europe for more than 500 years. The
first ”batch” was made in Luebeck, Germany during a time of severe drought.

Initially invented to keep people from starving, the confection quickly became popular. At first it
was exclusively made for the upper class. During the 1700s however, the confection
was made available to the general population and has been a favorite of Europeans ever since.

The confection got its name during the 18^th century in Italy. The word
marzipan means “bread from the holy Marc,” named after the patron of Venice at that time.
